Last week, our 6th graders emailed their Peru parter classmate for the first time, using Epals addresses. They were so excited to learn their partner's name and to get a chance to learn more about them! In their first email, they told their partner about themselves, and asked some questions, as a first introduction to each other. It's interesting to note that before beginning a collaborative global project, introductions and dicussion of culture are a necessary element to beginning a successful partnership (see also Kim Cofino's blog post on the Flat Classroom conference).Monday we had our first Skype meeting-it was brief since we only had about 10 minutes of time in common due to our schedules, but the students really enjoyed seeing each other. In the month of November, we have more common classroom time, so we will definitely Skype more then. For the next few weeks, Gerardo and I have planned for the students to create classroom podcasts on a variety of science topics to post on our wiki to share. We're also planning on using Voicethread for another project soon (the idea is to start with more simple projects and work up to more complex ones). I'm really enjoying teaching students the web 2.0 tools in the context of this global partnership!
